Sustainable Stansted recently worked with professional ecologists to complete a Biodiversity Study of our parish, mapping the habitats and wildlife found across Stansted Mountfitchet.
The study, published in 2026, provides a starting point for understanding what we have today and identifies opportunities to improve local habitats and support wildlife.
We will continue to use the study to inform our work. Recent or current projects include:
- Regular testing for water quality at Stansted Brook
- Installation of over 50 nesting boxes for swifts across the village
- Installation of nesting sites for sparrows
- Working with Stansted Mountfitchet Parish Council to identify sites within the village to increase biodiversity
- Using the information from the Biodiversity report to inform our responses to planning applications
The study also explores ways residents can make their own spaces more nature-friendly and get involved in protecting and restoring nature. This information was used to create this RESIDENTS GUIDE TO PROTECTING NATURE & BIODIVERSITY which provides accessible ideas and resources for residents who want to welcome wildlife into their garden.
You can read the full Biodiversity Study report below. The survey was supported by Stansted Mountfitchet Parish Council and funded by a Zero Carbon Community grant from Uttlesford District Council.
