Working with local businesses for a more Sustainable Stansted

Business has a huge contribution to make in reducing the carbon footprint of our community. We aim to work with businesses to support and promote their activity to operate in a sustainable way. As well as being critical for the future of our planet, “greener” working can also bring demonstrable business benefits.

For example:

• Cost reduction – reducing energy use and wastage is not only good for the climate, it can also lead to significant cost savings
• Winning business – many organisations are looking to the businesses in their supply chain to demonstrate their environmental credentials before awarding contracts
• Expanding custom – around 70% of 16-25 year olds are extremely or very worried about the climate (Lancet study, 2021).  They are increasingly looking to buy services and products from businesses that show they are reducing their environmental impact.
• Attracting and retaining staff – Millennials and younger workers are driving a growing trend of ‘climate quitting’ – seeking out more environmentally friendly jobs (KPMG research, 2023).

Our activities to support greener business in Stansted will include:

• Providing free consultation to help businesses identify ways to reduce their carbon footprint
• Sign-posting to other sources of support such as environmental standards schemes and UK Government Climate Hub One-stop-shop to help businesses save money and go green
• Producing a local badge which will allow customers to see those businesses that have committed to working towards a greener and more sustainable Stansted
